Can Invisalign Fix Overbite in Westfield, IN?

Introduction: A Smile That Works and Inspires

At our Westfield, IN orthodontic practice, we always preach that a beautiful smile is about so much more than just straight teeth—we want those straight teeth to be perfectly positioned in the smile frame esthetically (the blend of art and science), in addition to the proper FUNCTION of the teeth and bite.

We often get questions like this: “So, am I a candidate for Invisalign?...Can Invisalign do this??...Can Invisalign do that??”

The question really being asked here is “is this TOOL that I want to use going to give me the RESULTS that I expect?” Braces are a tool. Invisalign is a tool. Both move the teeth, and there are certain scenarios that make one tool more advantageous than the other based on the RESULT that we are trying to achieve.

What Is an Overbite—and Why Correct It?

Briefly, the common lay term “overbite” can refer to a couple things:

●     The vertical overlap of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. Too much overlap would mean a deep bite, and too little overlap would mean an open bite. For a deeper dive into deep bites (see what we did there ;) ), see our previous post here.

●     The horizontal relationship of the teeth, or “how much they stick out.” Too much or a “big overbite” is when the upper front teeth stick out too far. Too little of an overbite would mean the lower teeth are out in front of the upper teeth (aka underbite…think bulldog bite). For more detail about this type of overbite, see our previous post here.

Both of these overbite types can lead to issues if left untreated. Some possible issues include enamel wear, difficulty chewing or speaking, compromised long term longevity of the teeth, and sometimes an elevated risk of TMJ discomfort. These are two of the most common bite problems we orthodontists see, and colleagues like Dr. Fateh Arslan, a respected orthodontist in San Antonio, TX, can attest to the risks that come with leaving them untreated.

Can Invisalign Correct an Overbite?

Short answer: Yes!—especially for mild to moderate cases.

●     As a skilled Invisalign orthodontist, Dr. Titus uses custom, clear aligners to gently move teeth and gradually correct an overbite, often over the course of 12–24 months.

●     Often for these treatments ELASTICS are a crucial component of the treatment to get the bite fully corrected – but these can be worn with aligners too! So you can still get the discrete smile correction that you’re looking for.

●     More complex cases—such as skeletal overbites or very deep overbites—are often more efficiently corrected with traditional braces. Improvements can be made with aligners but full correction of more severe bites like this may be better treated with braces.

●     Mild to moderate overbites: Often corrected within 6 to 18 months

●     More Complex Cases: May take up to 24 months, depending on the unique case

3. Commitment & Compliance
Aligners must be worn 22 hours per day—they should only be removed to eat and brush. This is the most crucial part of your treatment, without excellent compliance, you teeth just won’t move.

4. Progress Monitoring
Periodic check-ins with Dr. Titus to ensure progress stays on track, while adjustments refine your aesthetic and functional outcomes.

5. Retention + Lasting Results
Retainers are essential to maintain your new smile and protect your investment in a healthy, esthetic result.

IMPORTANT! Results Are What Matter

We all want to look our best, be confident, and have a healthy and functional smile. It’s a no-brainer! After all, it’s the final result that is what matters. You don’t invest in aligners just to wear them, or in braces just to have them on your teeth…in the same way that you don’t invest in an espresso maker just to look at it! You’re investing in your final result and the doctor’s expertise and artistic ability to achieve it with you, not the tool itself. You want to be able to smell, taste, enjoy, (and be caffeinated by) the espresso from that coffee maker you splurged on!

Dr. Titus has your end in mind, and is a fanatic about stunning final results. He will always be honest with you about your treatment outcomes, the pros and cons about which TOOL you choose (aligners or braces), and the limitations that each one of them brings. In the end, it’s YOUR smile, and YOUR result, we are your guide along your journey to that destination. We, of course, want your very best result, and will do everything we can to give it to you!
